Feudal Japan Gamera redesign concept

Here he is, one of the most requested monsters you all wanted besides Toho kaiju. This is my Feudal Japan Gamera sculpt/redesign. Gamera is one of my favorite monsters in terms of the design and outside of the Godzilla franchise. Loved Gamera as a kid especially the Showa Gamera, but the Heisei trilogy is just so good that I need to rewatch it again haha. Would you like to see Feudal Japan Gamera fight Feudal Japan Godzilla?

Now for my design, always respecting the original ones, the overall design is kind of a combination of 99 and rebirth Gamera. 99 Gamera is actually my favorite design for Gamera and I kinda wanted my design to look similar. I wanted Gamera to look aggressive yet reassemble the gentle giant look. Because this is the Feudal Japan series and Gamera is a Japanese monster I wanted him to look very ancient and ornate as if he was more of spirit monster.

The shell was actually the most fun I had when sculpting. I wanted the shell look ornate and very ancient with these markings and patterns. When adding the scales, I incorporate it to make it a bit look like Samurai armor. The design needs to look like Gamera is a fighter and not just a generic turtle monster. Finally with the face I did incorporate some Hayan mask elements to capture the Japanese look, but not too much so he doesn’t look demonic. And for color, didn’t want him all charcoal like Godzilla so gave him more color by making his skin a blue green, then making his shell bone color to give the design some vibrance and life.
